MARABÚ CHARCOAL
Where it comes from:
Marabú is known scientifically as “Dichristachys cinérea”. It is a medium-sized bush (it reaches between 1 and 8 metres in height) which has short prickly branches and produces sulphur yellow and light pink flowers.
This bush arrived to Cuba from Africa in the 19th century and since then it has spread quickly throughout the Cuban countryside causing serious environmental problems.
Due to its fast growth this specious is now considered an invasive species by ISSG, a group of experts on invasive plant species. This is why, with the aim of helping to protect the country’s biosphere and improve its agricultural conditions, it is used in the production of high-quality charcoal.
